WSU Phi Beta Kappa Opens Applications for 2021-22 Scholarships

PULLMAN, Wash.—The Gamma Chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa Society at Washington State University is accepting applications through April 1, 2021 from undergraduates for 2021-22 scholarships that cover full tuition costs plus mandatory fees. Students from all WSU campuses are eligible to apply.

“The Gamma Chapter is very pleased to once again offer scholarships that recognize and foster excellence in liberal learning at the undergraduate level,” said Kim Holapa, chair of the chapter’s scholarship committee.

Since the 2010-11 academic year, the Gamma Chapter has awarded generous scholarships to rising seniors from a variety of majors. Also, each spring the chapter invites new members to join the society, becoming members for life.

PULLMAN, Wash.—Washington State University international student Oluwanifemi “Nife” Shola-Dare is one of 20 students to receive a new award from the nation’s oldest academic honorary, Phi Beta Kappa (PBK).

Shola-Dare, a neuroscience major from Nigeria and member of the Honors College, received the PBK’s first Key into Public Service Scholar award. Over 600 students from PBK chapter institutions—including WSU—applied for the new undergraduate scholarship designed to connect promising liberal arts and sciences students with opportunities in public service. Award recipients came from 14 states and three countries.

“We, in the PBK Gamma of Washington Chapter, are pleased that this new prestigious award has made its debut, and we are very proud that one of our own WSU scholars received it,” said Mary F. Wack, PBK member and officer for the local chapter.

Campus Freedom of Expression topic of Oct. 3 discussions hosted by WSU Libraries and Phi Beta Kappa chapter

The Contours of Free Expression on Campus” will be the topic of events starting at 4 p.m. Mon., Oct. 3, in Terrell Library Room 103, hosted by WSU Libraries and the Gamma of Washington chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at Washington State University.  The events are free and open to the public.

First on the agenda will be a video-streamed presentation featuring former Philadelphia Inquirer Executive Vice President and Editor William Marimow and Phi Beta Kappa Secretary/CEO Fred Lawrence. They are expected to engage in wide-ranging dialogue on recent challenges and resulting debaters concerning free expression occurring on American campuses.

PULLMAN, Wash.—Internationally renowned anthropologist Jeremy A. Sabloff will present “Archaeology Matters: The Relevance of Archaeology in the Modern World” Thursday, Oct. 6, at 5:00 p.m. in Todd Hall 276 on the Washington State University campus.

The free, public lecture is hosted by the Phi Beta Kappa’s Gamma of Washington chapter at WSU. Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious academic honors organization.
